dreamweaver

This project was frustrating because I didn't know any thing about dream weaver or photoshop. I have made my own website before using webs.com. Using webs was a lot more easier because was not so involved with codes and things. It was hard to remember all of the steps to all of the different processes, what folder to save things in and all of the different formatting. The more creative part in creating the website was fun. Once I found pictures that had the down load option. I would have liked to make the picture of the world to take up the whole top of the page. You can play with all of the different color combinations, fonts graphics, and where you wanted to put the contents of the website. I'm not to familiar with fonts and it would have been nice to hover over a font and get a preview of your site in the chosen font. I also didn't get the background like I wanted it. The green should be throughout the page, not just the top of the page.

Creating the Bio or about me page was fun but I was a bit unsure if it should have been more about myself professionally than my personal background. The interview we did in class help me think about things that would be good to put on my bio page. I thought between my picture on my home page and the pictures on my examples of previous work page, I had a good amount of graphics.

My website will be used to promote myself in many ways. My resume will tell people where I have worked in the past and about my work ethic. I didn't have time to get them but at the bottom of my home page I would have links to my Twitter, Facebook and E-mail. My website would have had examples of work I have done like, pictures I've taken, a Brochure I made for a nonprofit organization and a feature article I wrote about a biology professor I had. My website would also have my contact information such as E-mail and phone number. Personally I have old fashion views when it comes to self-promoting I would rather get out and meet the people I work with.

Social media ties in with my website with the links that I would have provided had we had more time that process seamed the easiest out of the whole website making process. It is important to leave your social media information because in today's society that is how people communicate, other than using the phone to text or call someone. Communicating electronicly using the internet is also a covenant way of communicating for us night owls Your website is more of a business kind of communication. Your website is an advertizement for yourself.

Websites are a good way to get your name out into the world. Personal websites like the ones we created are good way to communicate the idea of yourself as in your talents as well as ethic. I wish I had more time to get shown how to complete the project. I will be making my own website in the near futcher but will not be using dream weaver. I was more or less just clicking on random buttons to see what they did. The spit screen in dream weaver was very helpful. I think that if we could just simply save a document as “save as” it would have been a lot easier.

Before taking this class I was very anti-computer and technology but, because of this class I have learned to appreciate it more. It also saves a lot of trees which is a major plus for me. This semester I have gotten a nook and in the processes of buying an apple computer to familiarize myself with new software so I wont be so lost. Over the summer vacation I plan on revamping my present social media accounts to make them more professional. This project made me realize I'm more of a “doer” than someone who sits at a desk all day.

Tweeting

As many others in this class, Twitter as well as Twitpic were also another first for me. It took me a while to figure out how to tweet, fallow people, and respond to other posts but it became easier the more I explored. When my mouse would hover over an icon there was a label as to what it was, that was very helpful. I still don't know what the hash tags are all about. It was really hard to try and keep up with classmates and their tweets because some people didn't use their name so I had to keep counting to make sure I didn't miss Tweeting anyone.

Twitter has more uses than just socializing. You can learn all sorts of fun facts from the tweets people post. When fallowing people on twitter you can become more aware of the major events going on in the world. This is great because those who are “addicted” to the computer or the internet are hopefully not so sheltered. Twitter has a discover page where they suggest people or organizations you might enjoy reading or watching.

Twitter can be used to help journalists, politicians and also help people be organized by finding out what the most popular topics are, also what pictures and videos are getting the most attention.

The topic I chose for my twitter posts is being kind to the earth because its a topic I am very passionate about. The three groups I chose to fallow are National Geographic, because it's my favorite magazine. The second group I choose to fallow was NBC Nightly News because its my favorite news program. The third thing I fallowed was Nikki Sixx because I he is my favorite artist.

This was the first time I even went to the Twitter website. When first starting I didn't know the first thing about Twitter. I just figured that Twitter was another version of Facebook and Myspace. Twitter is different from blogging in the fact that Twitter you only have 140 characters to write something, where blogging you have all the space you want. Twitter is more of a “texting on the internet” where a blog is more of a “diary on the internet”. On twitter you can see what the most popular subject people are talking about. You can also see the top pictures and videos people are talking about. It's difficult to respond to Tweets that are not interesting or you know nothing about the topic. I don't think I will be using Twitter again.

                      - I would use hidden links to promote other sites. It helps you get in good with other sites and helps spread more information.

Good websites and bad websites

GOOD

1. http://www.nationalgeographic.com- I think this is one of my favorite cites. It is divided up into many links that are very easy to fallow. Some of the links include video, photos. links for just teachers, news and one solely for the magazine.

2. http://www.youtube.com- Youtube has defiantly made my life a little easier. Youtube allows people with busy schedules to watch or listen to the news. You can also watch free movies. The filter makes it very simple to locate hard to find videos or even clips of TV shows. It has links on the left side where you can search for music, news and TV shows.

3. http://www.yahoo.com- The homepage is filled with specific news links such as movie, sports, mail, local as well as world news. The front page has links to the top stories and whats trending in the news which is very efficient in finding stories. The yahoo homepage reminds me of am electronic version of a newspaper.

4.http://www.amazon.com- I use Amazon for many purchases. Their site is so simple when looking for a hard to find item. Amazon also recommends products you may like biased on previous searches. Although I think Amazon is a great site with very easy navigation, some products don't have product descriptions.
    5. http://www.topsmarkets.com/#!prettyPhoto- Top's website has a link to their weekly add which is very helpful to the environment. They also have easy to navigate links at the bottom of their page for things like their Monopoly game, a link for special coupons that you can put on your bonus card.
    6. Dicovery.com (The Discovery Channel)- The set up of the home page is eye appealing. With the names of shows hey have pictures of he characters. They also have a list of whats is airing on TV. The fact they have captions with the video's and clips is extremely helpful for newcomers.

  1. Wedg.com- This cite is very easy to navigate. Also all of their stories have pictures which is also pleasing to the eye.
    8. rockhall.com (rock and roll hall of fame)- They also have pictures with a little description next to them. They also have a link specificity for Rock and Roll inductees.
    9. http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com- Besides having a grate message, this site is filled with information and pictures. I would recommend that each cause get its own web-page so there is not an over load of information.
    10. http://www.epa.gov/- This site is very easy to navigate, all of the information is broken up into smaller categories. It also has buttons at the top to translate the site to a different language.

BAD

1. http://www.buffalostate.edu- The buffalo state web cite is good for information about classes but if you have a particular question some times it requires a lot of searching if you find an answer. The site does however have links right on the front page for events on campus and links to the student accounts for easy access.

2.
http://www.nwf.org- The National Wildlife Federation needs to have more educational information. The site is more dedicated to the organization such as background information and photos and articles from the magazine. It also has a direct link to donate money. The National Wildlife Federation should have news on their main page.

3. http://www.motley.com- I understand that Motley Crue has been around for a long time, I have been a fan for a long time, but their website has an overwhelming amount of text. I thought the graphics suited their style.

4. Marlboro.com- The cite has eye catching photos, mots of which remind me of home. They however could loose a few. The tool bat at the top is also hard to navigate.

  1. http://www.wikipedia.org/- This page is very plan there is no color. There are only 10 links. On the page.
  2. http://www.cosmopolitan.com/- This page could do without the side bars it makes the page too “busy”. I do think there navigation bar is very user friendly.
  3. http://www.freshstep.com/paw-points/- This page is not user friendly. Theirs not enough text to explain anything.
  4. http://www.victoriafrances.es/main.php – Although this site is eye appealing with all the graphics and effects all have a common idea. The site could be set up differently in the fact that instead of having a video to show the artists work they should have a photo gallery of some sort. There is also no information about the artist.
  5. http://www.josiewaverly.com/ - Although the site has good information and good quality pictures. I think the black background and white text is a poor decision.
  6. http://www.anotherchancepetrescue.org/ - This site needs more pictures of animals to be adopted on their front page and limit some of the text.

The Importance of Communication

When making our facebook pages communication was important. We needed to communicate with

someone who knew about our organization about history on the organization. Many people needed to

take pictures or videos of people so, they needed to tell others about the project. Lots of people in

general instead of e-mailing someone will say “Ill send it to you on facebook” or “Ill facebook you”.

Facebook is perfect for marketing because, you can reach any one with computer access in the world. It is so easy to meet people on the computer now, some are legitimate but some people are not who they say they are. Tons of businesses offer free internet connections, from car service stations to hotels, coffee shops, restaurants, and libraries. There really is no excuse now not to have a computer account of some kind. I learned so much about events at buffalo state and groups/places I never knew existed. Facebook is a good way to spread the word about a product or service. The right side of the facebook page is dedicated to ad's and people or groups you might know.

This project was a lot easier than the ones in the past. Trying to fins 3 groups/organizations was a bit difficult. There were a few times I was confused on how things were suppose to look and I could look at classmates pages for a model to look at to make sure I was doing things right. When making my personal facebook page I just threw some things together blindly. Now that I've learned how to do more things on facebook I found myself redoing my personal page.

Before taking this class I was a bit anti technology. Now I sill don't like the impact of technology on the environment but it makes it easier for people to communicate, you can have your music, email accounts, books, bills, watch TV, and have your phone all in the palm of your hand. A friend of mine is getting married in the fall, the Bride lives in Oakfeild NY, I live in North Tonawanda, another brides-made lives in Victor NY and two others are out of state. My friend finds dresses she likes and sends every one a link either via phone or facebook and every one will respond with their opinions. With it being difficult for every one to be together at the same time the internet makes planning so easy.

Video Reaction Paper

I thought this project was difficult because, I work nights and it was hard to find a time when everyone could get together. With my odd work schedule more planning was involved with shooting my clips that took place outside. When it came to the video and the computer I got frustrated because I don't know any thing about apple computers but once I started getting use to the video editing techniques it got a little easier. I'm still having a hard time trying to save it, there are just so many steps. In the process of editing I found a clip I wanted to re-shoot, I couldn't figure out how to move the re-shot clip with the more complete part of my profile video. Also during the editing process my clips kept resting themselves and the two pictures were not matching up. I took a bunch of small videos and then tried to combine them into one. That will be the last time I ever do that.

I also had a hard time with the audio for my movie clip. The song showed up in the library but, I was unable to click on it. The audio to my video is REM's “Its the end of the world as we know it”. I thought the song was appropriate because it is my belief that one day man will pollute the earth so bad it will no longer be liveable.

Using a video instead of writing to communicate leaves the message a little bit more open to interpretation. While writing makes the point more clear, using a video is more creative making people think about it more. I think videos are more influential than pictures in getting a point across because, you get the full context instead of just an image.

Viemo and youtube are both sites for viewing and uploading videos. Youtube at a glance seams to be more geared toward entertainment. Vimeo is more of a professional or a site a family would use to share videos through. Youtube is free to use. Viemo is free to use but you can get a membership for a yearly fee. Youtube also offers free movies from their site, viemo does not.

Both youtube and viemo allow people to share videos with other people who are on your contact lists. You can like both of the websites twitter and facebook, as well as fallowing the company on their own page. Both sites suggest video content you you to watch. Viemo and youtube both show how long the video is and how many people liked the video.

I think its great that there is a family friendly site where they can keep in-touch through pictures. I love youtube because you can watch music videos. They both also give you an option to watch videos at a later time.

BufWiki Reaction

In high school I was always told never to use Wikipedia because, any one can change the information. I would love to find those high school teachers and ask them if they would now allow the use of Wikipedia as a reference. I have found Wikipedia to become a useful tool when filling in missed notes from classes.

This was my first time making a web page besides our blogs in class. Coming up with a topic was my first struggle, what isn't on a wikki page now a days? I'm no where near computer smart so the project was a struggle trying to understand how to work with the picture programs. The most frustrating was trying to get the pictures where I wanted them on my wiki page. It was also a struggle with my work schedule to try and get out in enough day light to take pictures. I also had to use my GPS in finding the places I wanted to take pictures of. I learned what computer codes were, I originally thought it was something that had to get deciphered. I learned how to reformat pictures in the right sizes. While getting the pictures ready to post, I would randomly pick some numbers for the height and with and see if it looked good. I still do this I don't take pictures for any thing other than recreational use so the size to me is not important. Before making the BuffWiki page, I thought that pictures were just cut and pasted in a word document then the whole word document is transferred buy cutting and pasted in a word document then the whole word document is transferred buy cutting and pasting.

I never heard of BufWiki or WikiHow before this class. I think they are great sites, they let any one post any thing and therefore spreads knowladge. It's nice to know there are cites revolving around the city, it helps people become a part of the city instead of just a resident. My wiki pages belong on BuffWikki because it is about haunted places in Buffalo. They are relevant to Buffalo because all places are located in the Buffalo area.

BufWiki has many black headings from visiting, playing and dining. Under the headings there are blue links which will take you to a more specific category. If you choose any kind of destination it will give you locations, phone numbers, who the owner is, times they are open, as well as a link to their website, much like goggle maps. If you choose the link under media labeled newspapers it will list all of the surrounding newspapers available, when you click on the name of the news paper it will take you to the newspapers site. On BufWiki you can edit or create pages (it does have to get approved) and write a review about a place you have visited. BufWiki also has a section on the front page where it tells you how many pages have been created.

To communicate my Wiki page I posted pictures and all of the reference pages are links. Scene I just moved to town and don't know any thing about the Buffalo area, all of my information I got was from other sites. The most helpful was http://tonawanda-news.com/. All the information about “Mad Bear” was found on Mason Winfield site, http://www.masonwinfield.com/.

I thought the Wiki project was fun in the fact I got a chance to inform people about something that I was interested about. I just moved to the area and it was cool to learn something about the town. I'm looking forward to seeing what other new things that someone can do with technology. I think all three Wiki pages are good sources for information.

Web 2.0

Web 2.0 Part One

Web 2.0 is people being able to interact with their electronic device instead of just reading information. It lets people give their opinions with sites like Facebook and blogs. With the birth of web 2.0 the computer has more of a personal touch when looking for information. Web 2.0 has allowed people to further their education with more college courses available online. You can share photos or videos, talk to people on the computer, watch movies, tag pictures. Software allowing people to highlight and take notes on the computer helps save trees. I think web 2.0's advances are endless. Some day we'll be able to scan bar codes with out phones and be able to purchase things. I think web 2.0 lives up to the hype. It lets people Skype and learn more information than before and sharing it with others. Because of web 2.0 it has made it easier for kids with autism to communicate with others. I also think that because of web 2.0 not much is personal any more. Phones, laptops ext. are being micro chipped with trackers. People are getting personal accounts hacked into or stolen. There are people who expose themselves using the internet. Web 2.0 has also caused crime to rise with piracy and plagiarism. More and more young people are becoming addicted to social media sites which cause them to become more withdrawn. It would be a neat experiment to disconnect people from electronics for 48 hrs and see how they react.

Web 2.0 Part Two

Web 2.0 is allowing people to communicate better in the form of videos, links, music files and photos. Every one who has seen a website know that the formats are more or less the same. All well made web pages have the same kind of Who, What, Where, Why and How. More information is being put out to the masses by any one who wants to contribute. It also gives some people a scene of belonging. Wikipedia for example is a mass database of information that people contribute to or edit. It also improves learning with online college classes or long distance learning classes. More public buildings are being equipped with wifi so it makes it easy to get free internet. With Public Libraries having more computers it makes it easy for any one to have access to the internet. Web 2.0 helps bring people together, some examples would be, dating sites, Myspace, Skype and Facebook. Web 2.0 also helps business just starting out by spreading the word. Some people don't realize that once you post or write something on the internet it is out there permanently. Web 2.0 has given way to new forms of press releases and media kits for public relations practitioners. With the use of links and attachments media kits are more accessible and allow for more information. Web 2.0 also allows for more advertizing which helps keep prices of items down with the competition.

Its like learning how to ride a bike

The first time I used the internet it was in middle school. I was in the library talking to my friend Mandy who was on the computer. The librarian told me I either had to get on the computer or leave. Since Mandy was my best friend I wanted to stay. I wheeled my chair next to Mandy and stared at it blankly. Mandy had asked if I knew my log-in information, I just shrugged not knowing if I had to talk to the school to get one or if I already had one and didn't know it. She let me use her log-in name and password, I was so excited to be using this new contraption. So I'm logged in and had no clue what to do. Feeling stupid I asked Mandy what I should do, I didn't even know how to pull up the internet window. She pulled up the window and I started looking for pictures of animals just to pass the time. Other than that no one really taught me how to use the computer so most of my computer knowledge is self taught. Even now when I get pop up's asking for directions I just click an option and hope for the best.

Looking back on that moment I can't help but laugh. I got my first laptop in 2005 and I've been on it every day since. When I first moved out on my own and got an internet hook up I spent hours on You Tube looking up random music videos for hours and thought it was better than TV. I don't watch much TV but when I do its either music videos, documentaries or some sort of news program. I think the internet is wonderful and everyone should have access to it. I don't have cable but who needs cable now when there are sites like hulu and nextflix. With sites like facebook it seams no one E-mails any more because everyone is using Facebook to communicate. Facebook has allowed me to keep in-contact with family and friends out of state or even different countries.

I think that with the growth of technology people are not as personal as they used to be and their spelling has suffered with all of the short hand terms and abbreviations like “lol”, “bff” and “omg”. This year was the first time I did the vast majority of Christmas shopping online. It was so covenant to not have to have to deal with the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping at the stores. Or, worst yet the mall. I work nights so I sleep during the day and by the time I wake up a lot of places are closing for the day. I also pay most of my bills online. I work full time and go to school full time so the internet with out a doubt has made my life a lot less stressful. Now I wouldn't know where I would be without it.
